WHO IS TO BLAME?

There were two inquiries into the Titanic disaster. The first one was held in the United States. It found that Captain Smith was going too fast and blamed the British Board of Trade for letting the Titanic leave without enough lifeboats. The British claimed the right to hold their own investigation since the Titanic was a British ship. It was conducted by The Board of Trade. They found that Captain Lord of The California was to blame for not coming to The Titanic’s rescue.

Arrange your own trial in class. You will need a judge, a defence lawyer, a prosecutor, a jury and of course a defendant.

Who do you think was to blame?

Bruce Ismay who constructed the ship or perhaps the Captain. Maybe 2nd Officer Lightholler who followed the Captain’s orders or Fred Fleet who didn’t have binoculars in the crows nest. Or was it the iceberg’s fault after all?
